The beloved BBC crime drama Shetland is making a much-anticipated return for its tenth season, and the cameras are already rolling. This season promises more suspense and drama as filming kicks off with a stellar ensemble cast led by Ashley Jensen and Alison O’Donnell, reprising their roles as the determined DIs Ruth Calder and Alison 'Tosh' MacIntosh.
The upcoming six-part series is set against the backdrop of the picturesque yet haunting Shetland Isles, where a new murder mystery unfolds. This time, Calder and Tosh are navigating the intriguing complexities of a case centered on a slain retired social worker in the remote hamlet of Lunniswick. The peaceful facade of the community belies the darker secrets that the determined detectives must bring to light.
Familiar Faces and Fresh Talent
Fans of the series will be pleased to see the return of some familiar characters. Steven Robertson is back as DC Sandy Wilson, and Lewis Howden reprises his role as Sgt Billy McCabe, alongside Anne Kidd’s pathologist Cora McLean. Turner Watch’s mainstay, Angus Miller, continues as Donnie, Tosh’s partner, while Conor McCarry and Eubha Akilade return as PCs Alex Grant and Lorna Burns, respectively.
On the flip side, new cast members inject fresh energy into the storyline. Samuel Anderson steps in as Matt Blake, the new Procurator Fiscal, bringing his talents from works like Amandaland and Back to Black. Other newcomers include seasoned actors Clive Russell, known for his roles in Game of Thrones and Sandman, as well as Ellie Haddington from Motherland, Niall MacGregor, Greg McHugh, Frances Gray, and Louise Brealey. The series will also feature guest appearances ranging from Stuart Townsend to Lila Rose.

A Riveting Investigation
The murder investigation's nuance is one to watch, described as both 'gnarly' and intensely emotional. The body of the victim is found after being left exposed to the harsh elements of the Shetland landscape for several days. Such grim circumstances set the stage for an inquiry that will delve deep into the victim’s past and connections, as secrets long kept in the tight-knit community bubble to the surface.
Filming takes place across stunning locations in Scotland and the Shetland Isles, capturing the atmospheric beauty and isolating serenity that Shetland fans have come to love. With the series aimed for a release on BBC iPlayer and BBC One in 2025, there's much buzz about the suspenseful storytelling led by Paul Logue.
Speaking on the enduring appeal of Shetland, BBC Commissioning Editor Gaynor Holmes commended the team's dedication to creating gripping narratives season after season. Executive Producer Kate Bartlett also praised the unique storytelling that sets this season apart, acknowledging the vital collaboration with Scottish talents across production.
