How fortunes have changed for Paulo Sousa, last season he led Swansea to the brink of the play-offs in the Championship, but following his appointment with Leicester City in July his world has certainly turned pear shaped.
News this morning is that Sousa has been relieved of his duties with the Foxes, the day after chairman Milan Mandaric called for calm in the Leicester camp and support for Sousa.
On Tuesday this week Leicester lost to Norwich 4-3, but it the 6-1 thrashing by fellow strugglers Portsmouth the Saturday before will have hurt Mandaric most.
Leicester have managed just one win in their opening nine matches and are currently propping up the table with five points from Sousa’s brief tenure.
Bearing in mind that Leicester have been championship contenders for the last couple of seasons and that former boss Nigel Pearson took them into the play-offs last season, these are worrying times at the Walker Stadium.
The rumours have been around for a week or two suggesting that former boss Martin O’Neill has been pursued by Leicester and maybe that has a bearing on the sacking of Sousa.
There are also rumours today that Sven Goran Eriksson has been contacted by the club, but I am sure Foxes fans would prefer to see O’Neill back in charge.
Current goalkeeping coach Mike Stowell and coach Chris Powell will take temporary charge of the first-team for Saturday’s home match against Scunthorpe.
A statement from Leicester City reads;
“The decision has been taken as a result of the club’s poor run of results this season. The club would like to state that Paulo Sousa is a first-class individual, but that this decision has been taken in the best interests of the club and our ambitions to move up the npower Championship. The search for a new manager begins immediately and the club anticipates a quick appointment.”
